University and college students who are members of the Guard and Reserve may be called to active duty. In these cases, university and college administration and faculty can protect academic standings when students are deployed, perhaps even helping them to continue with their studies from a distance if they are given domestic military assignments that allow them time to pursue their learning.
If the student is a resident on campus, there will be issues around storage of personal belongings…particularly if activation is relatively sudden. If the student is at a college far from home and family, the situation may require even more support from the school’s campus life organization. Sometimes college students rally around an anti-war movement. University administration should be sensitive to issues relating to individual students who may be members of the military.
Sometimes companies provide part-time employment to college students who are also in the Reserves or National Guard. Consideration should be extended to these employees, as well, even though they are part-time employees.
