Family Support for Casualties

When an employee is called for active duty, there is always the possibility of death or injury. War is not a party; there is always risk. If an employee is killed or wounded, support from the employer and fellow employees can be very welcome. That support may be emotional, physical, and/or financial.

The employee’s immediate family and friends will be deeply involved, of course, yet there is much that employers and employees can do. Food, child care, short-term financial support, and numerous details can be provided.

Other situations may emerge in these difficult times. The parents of United Parcel Service airplane First Officer Marc Flagg were killed on the American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon. UPS managers and co-workers came to his home with food and support and followed up consistently in the weeks to follow. Flagg’s father was a Naval aviator, so UPS honored his parents with a donation in their name to the National Naval Aviation Museum.
