The Ethics of Mooching

August 26, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

Dear Dora,

I go to a lot of seminars around campus that I have no interest in, many of which are outside of my department, simply to get food. Even though I sit through the talks, is there any ethical or karmic reason to stop doing this?

Mooch, grad student

Dear Mooch,

Your question brings back fond memories of stacks of pizza ready to be devoured by starving graduate students. I would really like to thank you for honesty, because I know that many graduate students go to their own department seminars and either leave after getting food, or do not pay attention to the talks.

App Makers Like the Sound of Googorola

What do app developers think of Google’s union with Motorola? Boink.

That’s the name of a mobile dating app developed by Medl Mobile in Orange County, Calif. The app allows two people who each have downloaded Boink to tap their phones together and share personal information about their dating preferences.

But Boink has its challenges at least when it comes to making the app work on Android phones. That’s because Android runs on many kinds of phones, from companies like HTC, Samsung and Motorola, that in many instances must be programmed slightly differently.

Zynga Introduces CityVille in China

July 25, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

Zynga is going whale hunting in China.

The social game developer is introduced its first game in China on Tuesday, an adaptation of the extremely popular CityVille. Zynga had effectively been blocked from China because its games are played through Facebook, which is banned in the country. Zynga City, as the new build-your-own-town game will be called, will be played through the Chinese Internet portal Tencent.

Zynga, which is awaiting its Wall Street debut, declined to comment beyond a press release. But the Chinese version of the game, called Zynga City, will be closely watched for clues about whether the Chinese have as voracious an appetite for social games as Americans, who have propelled the four-year-old company’s value to as much as $20 billion.

Merely playing the game is not enough. N
