Google Executives Throw Themselves Into the Google+ Fray

June 29, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

It may be too soon to say whether Google+, the search companys answer to Facebook, will avoid the same disastrous fate as some of its earlier social networking products like Buzz and Wave, but theres no shortage of action on the site among those who have early access.

Members are already sharing content and photos through the site, but it seems as though most of the activity revolves around poring over the intricate details of the service and dissecting the best ways to use the features of the service.

Theres another unlikely suspect jumping into the fray: Googlers.

When Danny Sullivan, a noted blogger and early users, complained that it was difficult to set up an account for his blog, Bradley Horowitz, vice president of product management who is overseeing the project jumped in to clarify that the service wasnt yet set up for that.

Elevator Etiquette: The Essentials

by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

Had George Washington been born 200 years later, his famous quote on the necessary virtues of a society would no doubt have read “Religion, morality and elevator etiquette are the essential pillars of civil society.” Few situations are as uncomfortable as when someone violates the unwritten social contract we all have with the moving box.  However, based on thousands of rides in thousands of elevators, it is clear that elevator etiquette is as dead as General Washington.

So in an attempt to restore some sanity to our vertical commute, we’ve assembled the basics of elevator etiquette.

Like Kip, we all love technology.  But like the foreseeable cell phones on airplanes, not every breakthrough is a step in the right direction.  In the good ole days, people would have to wrap up their conversation before the signal-crushing doors slammed shut.  In some of the most horrific cases, they’d actually have to call the person back…in forty seconds. How the country made it through this difficult period in history, we’ll never know.  Spoiler alert: you’re not that important and nobody wants to hear your conversation.  Hang up.

In the absence of a stage or screen, there aren’t many places in society where a room full of people uniformly face the same direction.  Yet while there’s nothing particularly interesting about staring at the door of an elevator, what is interesting is that you won’t creep people out by facing the wrong way.  The only time you should be facing everyone else in the elevator is when you first step on, which should be immediately followed by a glance at the floors selected, a push of a button (if necessary) and a 180 degree turn.

Add a drop of food coloring to a glass of water and the particles don’t stay in a neatly formed drop – they disperse.  When stepping on an elevator, consider yourself liquid dye.  With the addition of each person to the elevator, riders should adjust their positions to maximize personal space (see Figure 1).  If standing six inches behind someone in an otherwise empty elevator is not criminal, it probably should be.

New Thoughts on Pharmacovigilance, Adverse Event Reporting and Social Media

June 27, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

About a year ago, I suggested that real time social media platforms like Twitter could be invaluable tools for adverse event (AE) reporting and related pharmacovigilance activities. However the mere mentioned of the dreaded AE causes many marketing, legal and regulatory affairs professionals at major pharmaceutical companies to break out into a cold sweat.

As Mark Senak aptly pointed out in a recent post on his blog EyeonFDA,

“…the reporting of adverse events using social media has long been the bogeyman feared by the legal and regulatory departments of drug manufacturers in the US.”

Further, Mark rightly asserts:

“….the adverse event issue may have proven a red herring.  That

To Boldly Go Where No Worm Has Gone Before

June 24, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

Actually the first nematode worm was blasted into space on April 16th, 1972, aboard Apollo 16. But the most recent celestial trip made by Caenorhabditis elegans was on a mission: To find out if RNA interference (RNAi) works in space.

I have no doubt you just expelled a mouthful of air in disdain and said to yourself “why do we care if RNAi works in space?”. Well, first of all, shame on you for losing your sense of curiosity and wonder. And secondly, it’s because RNAi as a therapeutic strategy holds significant potential in the treatment of the negative effects of space travel.

One of the many reasons human beings have yet to set foot on Mars is that by the time we’d get there our bodies would be in rough shape. Using c

Foursquare Checks Into $50 Million in Venture Cash

June 23, 2011 by Patricia R. Kivett No Comments »

Hot on the heels of its partnership with American Express, Foursquare, the popular location-sharing application, said on Friday that it had raised $50 million in venture financing in a round led by Andreessen-Horowitz.

The start-ups current investors, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Union Square Ventures, also participated in the round, as did Spark Capital. The new investment places the company’s valuation at $600 million.

The fresh infusion of cash will go primarily towards hiring more employees, particularly overseas, said Dennis Crowley, one of the companys founders.

Were seeing huge international pick-up, Mr. Crowley said in an interview. Were trying to figure out what that expansion looks like do we set up an office, hire international engineers?
